Dissecting Frog App for High School.

The following is a blog entry from the Science Department at Sullivan Heights.  Najinder Gill critiques an app she used in her Biology 11 course.

When I found out Najinder  dissected frogs in her classroom, I asked her if she was interested in doing a virtual dissection, and being one who loves to try something new, she agreed.  We talked for a while, she signed out an ipad to look  at Frog Dissection app for the iPad and off she went.  The interesting thing about Najinder's concept was she wanted to use the app for students that missed the live dissection since students couldn't do the dissection without supervision.  But she couldn't be in two places at once (continuing on with her class and catching the student up with what was missed).  She believed this was the perfect solution to that problem.  Below is Najinder's assessment of the app and the worksheet she used with the program is linked here as well as below.  Thank you Najinder Gill for sharing out there.



FROG DISSECTION APP

The frog dissection app is a very good app to use in place of doing actual dissection.  It is an app that I will be using with my classes. Reasons why the teacher may choose to do the virtual dissection: less expensive, if student is absent on day of dissection it is an easy makeup lab, for students who can’t handle doing a dissection, more ethical, students less likely to mess up the dissection, easier clean up, ….

The app has many things available on it – dissection, background information on frogs, life cycle, videos,….  Positives of the app: includes relevant background information of frog, includes how frogs develop, the dissection is quick and there is little room for mistakes,  all the internal parts of the frog are clearly seen (which may not be the case when you do an actual dissection).  The videos are simple and good visuals to show how the digestive and respiratory systems work.  The quiz is a great way of ending the lab which not only focusses on the frog but also the lab techniques used. Sometimes it is difficult to explain to students how to cut open the frog and what tools to use so the app helps with this.

Critique: I think  students need to be guided on how to use the app and that they don’t just jump to the dissection without going through the background information first. To help with this  I have included a handout to use with the app which guides students through the app. The app doesn’t show the difference between a male or female frog.

Blogging in Science

My "Guest Blogger" today is K. Phillips @Phillipskerri, a Phy Ed Teacher and Science teacher who really took an interest in the iPads.  The following is her story:


I think that the biggest challenge was not knowing if my ideas would work on the classroom scale.  I found that I could try something on my iPad or laptop and it would work and then in the bustle of the classroom with 30 kids trying to produce something there were inevitable problems.  Essentially, the iPads are not meant to be a shared device, and we had many problems with students logging onto apps and not being able to log off.  Scary, when they are then shared with another class the next block, and there is someone's blogger or twitter account ready to be posted from.  Yikes.

We also had problems once the work was completed, not being able to access that work from outside the iPad since the students were not able to email or tweet their work to me.  We all started blogs and were able to post work to our blogs from the iPads (thanks to the open wireless at our school) even as drafts that could be published later.  We also had trouble posting video - and thanks to some help from the students, were able to upload video to our own YouTube channel.  Pretty cool.

I think that the biggest learning experience in this process was to trust the students.  They were very patient and helpful in troubleshooting and problem solving.  Even though not all grade 12 students are digital natives, we were given the opportunity and freedom to create solutions together - collaborating with each other, trying things, failing at things until we found ways to make it work.  It is hard as the teacher not being completely "in charge" of what is happening - things not going to plan, changing on the fly.  It makes it very easy to quit a project or assignment that is not turning out the way that you think that it should or taking way longer than you think that it should to complete.  But I don't think the failures should be a reason to quit - if we think like scientists, we learn from all of our experiences, and it brings us closer to finding something that will work.  If I had tried to work all the bugs out before implementing the iPads in the classroom, I would still be waiting.  
Okay - some of the apps that I would recommend:

SHOW ME - it was very cool - I have been using video as assessment, having students explain concepts with manipulatives, white boards etc., and this app takes that to the next level.  You record voice and writing on a white board simultaneously (like that guy with the brown marker).  You need to create an account and these are posted directly online - either public or private with a web address as a link that some students then posted to their blogs.  It was especially good for students who aren't as comfortable in front of the camera - this is just voice and drawing/labelling etc.  Lots of possibilities.

SKITCH - basically drawing/typing over a picture (either taken with iPad or downloaded).  Can also draw shapes and labels on white background (we did RNA/DNA with labels).  The jpeg is then saved to the camera roll of the iPad and we posted them to our blogs.

BLOGGER - a good app that allows students to sign in and out (and is free).  Simple to add posts or drafts and easy to post photos from the camera roll - students with iPhones can use the app and post pictures from labs and classroom activities with a short description really easily.  Students couldn't find a similar free app for android/blackberry.

I have lots to say about the use of blogging in Biology as well - just need to think about it a bit more first...

App Overload at Sullivan Heights.

The following link is a google doc that has all the apps that we have on our iPads, some we've already removed.  Our iPad cart (consisting of 31 iPads, a LCD projector and an Apple Talk box) is considered a moving cart, one that anyone can sign out at any time.  So when we had a 1/2 day of looking at apps we were inundated with apps the teachers wanted to try.  We loaded them all, and then had 4 iPads for teachers to sign out and use.  We've been slowly but surely going through them.  As you can see, many of them have been evaluated, over 80 of them.  As stated before in a previous blog entry, unless we solve the problem of having generic emails set up for these iPads, many of these apps are useless to us.  The apps have to be like Blogger, where the person can put in their email address, then take it out when completed.  This is the only way a cart of iPads can be shared among all the staff and students.  We need to look at our emailing system once more.

So take a look at what we like, and don't like.  You may be surprised.  We were.  What we liked the most were any apps that had a web site online where you could save your material there, so you did not need to email the work to the teacher.  

Anyone know of a comic maker that does this?

Learning Summary of an innovative teacher

Davis is new teacher at our school that fully embraces technology.  He has used the iPads, the COWS (computers on wheels), the library, working hard on engaging students in his Language classes with the use of technology.  He uses the technology for assessment (oral composition online), making an oral assignment fun instead of just memorization.  You can see much of his work online on his wiki at http://mrdavisfrenchclass.wikispaces.com/ and you can see his summary and assessment of what he's learned this year at Sullivan Heights.  Even better, follow him on Twitter.

 What Worked:
Ipads: fotobabble App.
  • Easy to create an account and use
  • Take a picture and record voice over picture
  •  Can sign in on the fotobabble website to copy and paste the link of the conversation and upload it to a wiki
  •  Some issues with uploading the conversation on the app. Have to test it at the start of class and if it doesn’t work, sign out and sign back in and it should work


What didn’t Work:
Ipads: garage band
  • Couldn’t save the files anywhere besides on the app
  • Couldn’t transfer the conversation file to an email, wiki or itunes

Ipads: email
  • Couldn’t sync any student emails to any projects
  •  Only capable of storing one email address
  • Overall I think the ipads and the fotobabble app is better than using a PC for recording conversations. Students are able to receive such quick feedback while playing back their conversations. They can also get the app for their iphones, ipods or itouches which gives them access to the tech on their own.
Overall Mr. Davis' innovative methods of differentiation with students, engagement of activities, and just plain putting the fun back into learning a language has the students clamouring to learn more.  Excellent work Mr. Davis.

The Learning Journey of a Language Teacher.

Ups and Downs of Technology Usage in Schools.
Two years ago a young enthusiastic teacher wanted to learn some web 2.0 tools online and asked me if I knew a few.  I sent her to a site I has worked on for a couple of years and off she went exploring. Last year she started to explore on her own and started to share new tools she found, I started to share back, and we began networking.  Last year Jacqueline started to explore and blog her learning for the grant graciously given to us by Surrey School District to explore different means of learning for us and our students.  Today you can read Jacqueline's summary of her learning for the grant at http://snfteacher.blogspot.ca/ .  You can also read her ideas of what she used in the classroom, what worked, what didn't and why for each.  Those Spanish and French teachers, start following her on twitter - @senoritaac ...  She's worth it!!!  You go Jacqueline!!!  You'll put me out of a job yet!!

Edistorm on the IPads


I have always ranted and raved about Edistorm, a Web 2.0 tool that is perfect for brainstorming, for pre-assessment of student knowledge as well as organizational for students doing a project.  The different printouts help teachers to mark student work, and get a great assessment tool of critical thinking on the part of the student.  But like so many other Web 2.0 tools that don’t work on the IPads due to lack of Flash, I was concerned about the same problem with Edistorm.  To my surprise, they were building (as we speak) an IPad friendly beta site, using one finger and two-finger control.  So lets take a look.
Students can start brainstorming online by creating a new “Storm”—a project page. Or the teacher can set one up, type in a name for the project, add a goal or description, and start inviting collaborators (her students). You can make it public or visible to anyone. Once you’re on your Storm page, you’ll see a wall and a virtual stack of sticky notes on the left. You can change the wall to a SWOT or Venn diagram or many others, depending on your needs.  Anyone you’ve invited to participate can type an idea on a sticky note and place it on the wall wherever they want. You can change the color of the sickies as well.  Notes can be moved and organized in an endless number of ways, or grouped by color to better illustrate whatever point it is you’re trying to make.  There are drop down menus to help you with this feature or the users can use one finger to move the stickies or two fingers to  enlarge the screen or make it smaller.  Because Edistorm operates in real time, you will SOMETIMES immediately see whenever another users adds a sticky or makes adjustments to the wall.  On the pads you need to refresh the browser every one in a while to update what has been added to the wall..  The best part of this app is the ability to think on the fly and to share ideas instantaneously.

As stated before two fingers will shrink or make larger your screen.  One finger moves the stickies around.  There is a voting system, you just click the sticky by the number and that creates the vote.  You can assign how many votes each student gets when you set up the storm. 

I still love this program for the pre-assessment value, the post-assessment value and just the idea of being able to jot down all your ideas at once, then organize them, and get others to help you consider everything by commenting on your ideas and stating which ones are the best.  The possibilities are endless.

The Problems with Sharing the IPads in a School...

If you're sharing your iPads in your school in the senario of a cart of iPads being signed out by a number of different teachers every day, you've probably encountered one of its most glaring shortcomings -- the iPad was designed primarily as a one-person gadget.  Most of the apps typically only supports a single user account that may be hooked to the email setting of your iPad.. That's a major problem if you've bought the iPads to share with the entire school.   Now there is an app that lets multiple users share a single iPad and maintain separate identities.


Our Pad lets a number of users access a single iPad, each with their own separate password-protected accounts.  It may not be the answer to every problem you may encounter, it's made for one family who want to share a device, but that doesn't mean you can't use it in a different area.  

Our iPad does not actually create separate log-ons and user accounts like you'd expect with an OS like Windows. Instead, it's an app that sets up any number of unique accounts for identity-driven services like Gmail and Facebook. That means most of the apps on your iPad are still community property, but there's a firewalled zone users can go to to get webmail, so this helps when it comes to emailing your work in programs like ComicLife, and such, that use the email setting on your Pad.Right now, Our Pad supports Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Twitter, and Facebook, with more services promised. Users don't need to enter passwords to get to their accounts; the program recognizes a user-specified lock pattern for easy access. It automatically signs users out when the iPad is idle or goes to sleep for added security.  

This may solve some of our problems, we'll see if we can bust this program or not.   As LifeHacker stated "It's not as good as Apple allowing multiple user logins, but it works well enough so people who share an iPad don't have to constantly log in and out of social networks and emails when they hand it over."  I'm also considering how many users can you put on this IPad?  Not for every student I'm sure but can we not make generic email accounts and try that?  Will have to try.


So, here are some considerations and questions to answer in no particular order:

  1.  How many users can you have on one IPad with this app?
  2. Do you have to reset everything when you factory set your computers?  Or rather you can then go with the backup if you want?  Do you have to reset when you upgrade to a new OS system?  There's a lot of time and effort (close to an hour a pad) to update.
  3. Can you break into the system?
  4. Will this help the saving issue?
  5. Will Dropbox have the same problem?
  6. Do I need generic accounts (30 of them) to assign to a classroom of students to be able to use this feature?  
  7. How do I fix the problem of Web 2.0 tools not working with IPads because of the flash?  
  8. There is a dilemma of constantly updating all these apps.  So we have to limit the apps we use.

Apps for Appetizers

Apps
In the morning today many of our staffs joined us in the library at Sullivan Heights to have "Apps for Appetizers".  For breakfast we had croissants, jam, and coffee around tables that had IPads on the tables, and the lists of Apps on the IPads themselves.  The following is that list of Apps.  There are many.  The purpose of today's Pro D was to have the teachers look through these apps, decide if they are useful, and then investigate others they believe will be useful for our students.  Check out these of interest.  Soon I'll remove the apps the teachers do not want and add those that they researched this morning and want to include on the IPads for the students to use.  You can do your own comparison.  Thank you.

The Overwhelming effect of App Learning




This Wednesday I worked with two teachers  with the Ipads in our school, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, both in science.  It was a great time, and a wonderful learning experience but in the process of  facilitating learning with these two teachers I was learning as well.  The teachers had explored for a week the IPad apps we loaded on our IPads so far (teachers can sign out the IPads to borrow for a week so they may feel comfortable with them).  At present we have 38 apps on the IPads.  Some the science teachers found useful, some not.  Both teachers had specific ideas of what they wanted to do with the IPads and were surprised with some of the apps of science already on them.  Some of the apps available are Science 360, Planatary, NASA, IMotion for videoing experiments, Garage Band for making audio explanations of what they learned,  and others.

The problem was, and is, the fact that I can't know every single App that we download, I can't learn and teach each one as fast as the teachers want to start exploring them and ask for help.  Thus the idea is for each person interested in downloading an app to teach other teachers their app selection.  The idea is for me not to be the central teacher, but for every teacher in the school to be an expert in one or more apps of their selection.  I am considering having an "App Appreciation Lunch Club" once a week, learning a couple of new apps during lunch time.  Another way to share in our school.

Why do this lunch time learning?  In August 2010, Pepperdine University launched a three -term study to assess the iPad potential in learning, and the 2011 results showed a number of interesting findings.  One of interest to me was what worked, what did not, why and what evidence was found.


WHAT WORKED
Faculty member knows the apps well, encourages students to teach each other with class activities

WHAT DID NOT
Faculty member does not know how to use the apps they require students to use for their course

WHY.
If a faculty member is frustrated with an app, most students won't even bother trying to use it, especially if they can learn the material elsewhere

EVIDENCE
Focus group feedback from students:
"Because there was no training on the apps I had to fend for myself and was confused much of the time. The professor was unable to help as they were just as confused. The iPad was ineffective because no one knew how to use the apps."
"You're more likely to help each other when it's portable and you can see what each other is doing."   Quantitative data from end-of-term surveys was also gathered.


Another item of interest:


WHAT WORKED
Encourage use of the iPad with everyday apps for note taking, email, PDF, ereaders, etc. Ease students into using the device.

WHAT DID NOT
Jumping right into complex app use or assignments when students are not comfortable with the iPad.

WHY
There is a learning curve to using the iPad.

EVIDENCE
Focus group feedback from students:
"I just finished the news brief in Keynote. It took longer than I expected. Keynote is not hard to use, but takes awhile to get use to just like using any new program." - iPad class student

Interesting concepts both, and something to explore further at the secondary level.  The most important concept is the true fact that the teacher must be very confident with the App before using it and that it must have revelence and add to the lesson, not be the lesson itself.
